Chúng ta đã biết thao tác whois để kiểm tra thông tin tên miền với giao diện web, như: internic.com, who.is, matbao.net. Nhưng bạn có biết cách whois bằng lệnh ngay trên máy tính kết nối mạng của mình?
Nếu bạn dùng Linux, thật dễ dàng, chỉ cần gõ lệnh:
whois degiocuondi.com
Nếu bạn dùng Windows thì khó hơn. Bạn cần biết dùng lệnh telnet cổng 43 vào các server chứa thông tin whois. Bạn cần làm 2 bước:
1/ Bước 1: Xác định whois server quản lý tên miền theo đuôi:
+ com: whois.crsnic.net
+ org: whois.publicinterestregistry.net
+ net: whois.crsnic.net
+ edu: whois.educause.net
+ cc: whois.nic.cc
+ ws: whois.worldsite.ws
+ us: whois.nic.us
+ info: whois.afilias.info
+ biz: whois.biz
Tên miền của bạn là .COM, .NET, ...sẽ có server tương ứng.
Ví dụ: degiocuondi.COM ==> .COM ==> server là whois.crsnic.net
Sau đó thực hiện telnet vào cổng 43 của server, ví dụ:
- telnet whois.crsnic.net 43
telnet whois.crsnic.net 43
sau khi kết nối, bạn nhập thêm:
degiocuondi.com

Bạn cần xác định whois server của registrar nơi đang duy trì tên miền của bạn, xem dòng:
- Whois Server: whois.onlinenic.com

Qua bước này bạn đã có các thông tin sau:
+ Registrar: Nơi đang duy trì tên miền
+ Whois server: Nơi chứa thông tin whois chi tiết, ta dùng thông tin này cho bước 2 (lấy thông tin chi tiết)
+ Name server: cho biết server quản lý DNS của tên miền
+ Status: Cho biết tên trạng thái tên miền
+ Creation Date: Ngày đăng ký
+ Updated date: ngày cập nhật cuối (như renew, đổi DNS, đổi whois, ...)
+ Expiration date: ngày hết hạn
2/ Bước 2: Truy vấn thông tin liên hệ của tên miền.
Theo bước 1, bạn đã xác định whois server của tên miền degiocuondi.com là whois.onlinenic.com, bạn bắt đầu truy vấn bằng lệnh telnet vào cổng 43.
- telnet whois.onlinenic.com 43

sau khi kết nối, bạn cần nhập vào tên miền cần truy vấn
